The time is now…
We can all agree that our healthcare system has been in deep trouble for decades and will not heal on its own.
The data supports that our national healthcare system is physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially suffering. As patients, we also see our healthcare teams running ragged daily, feeling overwhelmed and frequently understaffed, leading to less time spent with us in our appointments, and creating strain on the sacred doctor/clinician-patient relationship.
Our beloved culture of medicine has also been shifting rapidly in a negative direction, further exacerbated by our pandemic over the past several years. What we cherished and admired has now become fragmented and siloed and is becoming a career to transition out of for a majority of physicians, clinicians and employees. Unless we immediately implement targeted data-based interventions, we face an unprecedented decline. The reality is that these interventions already exist and have been studied for decades. We have the research, the methods, the solutions, the experts, the researchers, and the financial data showing well-being metrics directly linked to profitability.

So what are the barriers and resistance to implementing all of this starting today?
There are also many positive aspects to our systems and culture of medicine that have worked for us for centuries, including commitment, dedication, compassion, caring, and best-practice standards. When addressing any change within a specific healthcare organization, structure, or even in our culture of medicine, we must create a successful transition stage. This transition must include diagnosing our present situation- organizational and cultural norms, beliefs, group dynamics, and framework to make this transition successful. We need to identify what works well for us and what aspects need to be adapted or replaced with a healthier approach.
Creating a supportive infrastructure within all levels of our culture and organizations is the key to embracing the complexities of today. We must also commit to elevating our standards of care to include organizational well-being, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and human capital metrics while embracing technology to assist us with integrating these many facets of our national healthcare system.
With each initiative, we are moving towards healing on extraordinary levels. This future we are creating has empowered patients and leaders with resources and tools for thriving organizations, physicians, and healthcare workers who discover a new passion for their work. Each Hope for Healthcare conversation stands in the commitment to this vision – it is a worthy future.
