Healthcare Well-Being –
A National Imperative
Patients want to be heard and, instead, feel neglected.
Medical staff are overwhelmed, understaffed, and exhausted.
This has strained the sacred doctor/clinician-patient relationship, and it’s no wonder because…
How can we properly care for our patients when we aren’t taking care of ourselves?
It’s Time to Heal Our Culture of Healthcare
That’s the bad news about the current state of our healthcare system. The good news is that proven targeted data-based interventions already exist and have been studied for decades. We have the research, the methods, the solutions, the experts, the researchers, and the financial data showing well-being and human capital metrics directly linked to profitability – we just have to commit to implementing what we already know works.
How Do We Bring About Meaningful and Sustainable Change?
We create a successful transition stage by:
Diagnosing our present situation – organizational and cultural norms, beliefs, group dynamics, and framework.
Identifying what works well for us – commitment, dedication, compassion, caring, and best-practice standards.
Determining what aspects need to be adapted or replaced with a healthier approach.
Next, a supportive infrastructure must be re-defined and created within all levels of our culture and organizations. Standards of care must include:
Organizations addressing systemic drivers of burnout.
Evidence-based solutions for incorporating DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and a Sense of Belonging throughout the fabric of the healthcare system.
Evaluating progress utilizing established human capital metrics.
Most importantly, investment in the health and well-being of healthcare workers, including leadership training. Everyone must be empowered and in alignment to help create system values and to work toward a common goal.
With each positive step forward, we move towards healing on extraordinary levels.
